If you are looking forward to a big night out, then there are many important things to consider including clothes, location and exactly how much you are planning to drink. However, the vital final touch is always to ensure that you have got the perfect designer fragrance on – make sure, though, that you do not get the application wrong which is easier to do than you might think! Here, then, are our tips on applying your perfume so it serves you in the best way possible:
Avoid layering different scents. One of the plus sides of many designer fragrances is that they will usually have a shower gel and body lotion product in addition to the perfume itself. One of the main ways that a fragrance can work against you is if it clashes with the smell of your shower gel or soap – eliminate the problem by keeping them all the same!
Do not overdo it. This is fragrance application 101, without a doubt. The golden rule of perfume is to not overdo it: whilst it might attract the attention of the fit guy at the bar ten yards away, it will choke your mate next to you to death! As long as it’s enough to subtly make it’s way into the nostrils of the person in the near vicinity, then the perfume is doing it’s job.
Learn the ‘notes’. When applying a fragrance, it’s important to remember that it will develop in ‘notes’ - the top note (the initial scent), the middle note which occurs after around 15 minutes and then finally the base note which is the long term scent that arises from the combination of your skin and the perfume itself. This is why it’s important to try your fragrance out first: you want to make sure that the base note is a good combination, otherwise you will begin regretting the application pretty quickly!
Keep your fragrances in the right place. Just as is the case with many different products, it’s vital that you keep your fragrances in a cool, dry place: many people do not realize that perfumes can go off, leaving them smelling extremely unpleasantly! Once you have opened them, keep those fragrances in the perfect conditions and use them within a year or so. If you do not, you will wind up having a very unpleasant surprise upon spraying them!
Use a lighter fragrance in the summer. Whilst many people do not realize this, during the summer months designer fragrances will actually come across as being much stronger, due to the open pores more frequent in hot weather, the scent is absorbed more by the skin leading to that stronger scent. Because of this, it’s important to make sure that you either apply less of the scent you’re currently using, or alternatively find a specialist summer fragrance. Fortunately, many manufacturers will have a ‘summer’ version of their fragrance that is designed specifically to combat this problem, and offer you a lighter more subtle equivalent of that scent that you love so much.
